Response Paper #1

The most recent novel that I have read is the third book of the I Am Number Four series, The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore. I chose this text because the book interests me through its fantasy aspect and the action. The series intrigues my creativity to try and guess what’s going to happen in the next book. I believe the message of this piece is to never give up on anything and to go after what it is you want to achieve. Some major events are when the each of the Garde members, six alien teenagers who have legacies to help save Earth from the Mogadorians, find each other all over the world. Some of the Gardes have bits and pieces to the story of how to find each other, why the government is working with the Mogadorians and how to defeat the Mogadorian leader Setrakus Ra. They each have their own special powers and when almost all of them come together to defeat Setrakus Ra, he got away but that won’t stop them in trying to find one more Garde member and beat him. This novel related to me in how the Garde needed each other to defeat their great enemy, Setrakus Ra, although I don’t have any special powers or need to save Earth, I went through trying to fight an internal enemy and friends and family helped me defeat that enemy. The message to never give up despite any obstacle can only help a person grow stronger and more aware for next time. I read these types of novels whenever I have free time, after I get other homework done or late at night when I try to go to sleep. The I Am Number Four series does a good job of tying together fantasy and action. I like the fact that, in a way, the characters in the novel are relatable because some fall in love, some are like tomboys or shy or mischievous. The plot of the story in how these ten Garde aliens who are supposed to protect Earth from the Mogadorians and the search for the need to find each other in able to do that is suspenseful because the reader doesn’t know when or if someone is going to die or not or if they are ever going to be able to beat Setrakus Ra. It’s frustrating because as the reader you have all of the pieces put together from reading each person’s experience throughout the novel and so when the characters don’t get it or don’t understand you wish you could skip to the end to find out if they figure things out. I thoroughly like the I Am Number Four series and cannot wait to start reading the fourth book.
